 Using a Type Well

A Type Well is a typical forecast for a certain type of well in a specific area.  A common application for type wells is in the development of a shale gas plan or SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) development.  A type well is useful in WellSpring, as it can be used in many of the automated drilling areas (such as the Activity Scheduler).

To create a "Type Well"

  1. Create a well (New Well)
  2. Add a Production forecast for the well
  3. From the Network Tab, select the well that is going to be your "Type" well
  4. Check the "Exclude from Calculations" Option on the right of the Network Tab

You have now created a type well, that can be used as a template well anywhere in WellSpring. The well will be drawn in Network Tab with a large "X" indicating that it is excluded in calculations.

Adding the Type Well Production Forecast

A type well forecast is typically of an array type. To enter an array forecast choose "Array(Time)" or "Array(Cum)". Here we select the Array(Time) option.

After clicking on the "Edit Arrays" link, the following array editor will appear:

Data can be entered (via copy and paste) from Excel. Right-click –and select "Paste into all array columns".

Be sure that you set the options for the data - monthly/yearly or Daily Rates /(monthly) Volumes. Also, be sure that your units are the same (m3 Vs Bbl)

See Creating a Drilling Program  for the use of template wells in drilling scheduling.
